The gmina covers an area of 193.89 square kilometres (74.9 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 10,751. The gmina contains part of the protected area called Przedbórz Landscape Park.

The city is located in the middle of the wi tokrzyskie Mountains (Holy Cross Mountains), at the banks of Silnica river, in northern part of the historical Polish province of Lesser Poland. Once an important centre of limestone mining, Kielce is now a centre of trade and commerce.
